Mets Demote Luisangel Acuña, Second Top Prospect Sent Down in Two Days

⚾ Mets Option Luisangel Acuña to Triple-A Amid Offensive Struggles

For the second consecutive day, the New York Mets have demoted a former top prospect to the minor leagues.

On Monday, June 23, 2025, the team optioned infielder Luisangel Acuña to Triple-A Syracuse, just 24 hours after catcher Francisco Alvarez was also sent down.

Acuña’s Offensive Decline Leads to Roster Move

Acuña, the younger brother of Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr., has been in a prolonged offensive slump. After a promising April where he slashed .308/.357/.385 with five doubles, his performance dipped steeply:

  • May: .204/.254/.222

  • June: .167/.211/.167

Over the season, Acuña’s numbers have bottomed out to a .241/.293/.283 slash line, with no home runs and a 68 OPS+, making him 32% below league average.

As a result, the Mets have called up veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski to take Acuña’s roster spot.

“We have made the following roster moves,” the Mets announced on X (Twitter) with an official update.

Francisco Alvarez Also Sent Down

Francisco Alvarez, once considered the Mets’ long-term answer behind the plate, was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday before the team’s game against the Phillies.

Alvarez has hit just .236/.319/.333 in 35 games, with only 3 home runs and 38 strikeouts. His slow start has been compounded by a hamate bone fracture sustained in spring training, which delayed his season debut until April 25.

Alvarez hit 25 home runs just two seasons ago but has struggled to regain that form.

Looking Ahead: Mets Hoping for Midseason Turnaround

Despite the recent demotions, the Mets are optimistic. Both Acuña and Alvarez remain critical pieces of their young core, and the front office hopes the time in Triple-A will help them get back on track ahead of a potential playoff run.
